Three Simple Steps to Great Content

Here are three simple rules for creating great content for your website:

1. DO NOT write content for the sake of Google or the Search Engines.

In other words, do not take the keyword you want to rank for and place it 50 times on your home page in places that would not be natural  Remember, links get you ranked; including the keyword a few times (or 50 times) will not.

The content on your site should be written for the end-user actually reading the copy.  Google wants to rank websites that provide the best experience for the end-user.  Your website copy should be focused on converting the website visitor, and providing value.

2. Use the Google AdWords keyword planner for content ideas and focus on research keywords.

If you’re going to take the time to create great content, it’s important to write about topics and keywords that people are actually searching for. The two benefits of doing so are: 1) potential of receiving targeted traffic to your site based from people searching for keywords related to the content; and 2) you are still giving Google what it wants in terms of having quality content on your site.

Google provides a free tool called the “Google AdWords Keyword Planner” for doing keyword research. You can enter any given keyword and Google will show you a list of variations of that keyword, as well as related keyword ideas and how many times that keyword was actually searched for the last month.

At the bottom of the content, such as an article or blog post, you should have a strong call to action to get the user to go to your home page, join your newsletter, call you on the phone, etc.

Note: We say focus on research keywords for the sake of creating content because that is what content applies to.  When attempting to get ranked for buying keywords, you most likely want to send that traffic to your home page or a specific landing page to convert the user.

3. Repeat the process!

Getting great content on your site is NOT a one-time process! You should continuously add great content to your site. Simply create a goal that calls for creating one high-quality article for your site every single week.  After several weeks, you’ll be well ahead of your competition, and you will never have to worry about Google penalizing you because you don’t have a great site.

Also, most of our clients are business owners that have become experts in their chosen fields over the years.  Use your expert knowledge as an unfair advantage!
