I’ve been doing this a long time. From producing websites since 1998, to using social media in 2006, we’ve been along for the ride. It’s my job to basically convince people that investing in internet strategies is best for their business. This comes, more often than you’d think, with some interesting excuses of why they aren’t interested or why they need to cancel services with us. Here’s my top 7 in regards to social media.
The 7 Most ridiculous things people have said to me about social media.
There’s some shady people following me, I don’t want them on there! This person was deeply concerned that her reputation was on the line because someone with an undesirable profile was following her. I assure you that your customers aren’t searching through your followers and passing judgment. We all know that anyone can follow anyone and that you have no control over that. Relax. Nobody cares if a drug dealer, a stripper, or President Obama is following you.
My Audience isn’t on Twitter (or Social Media for that matter). Umm… 90% of all people in the world are on at least 1 social network. Trust me, they are on there.
My Competitors aren’t using Social Media. Hmmm. I thought you were a leader in your industry? Sounds like you are a follower to me. My best advice is to never assume what is working or not working for your competitors. Create your own strategy and own it. To me, this sounds more like opportunity than a reason NOT to do it.
After 1 year of (sort of) using Social Media: I’m not getting enough customers, I’m pulling the plug. Pulling the plug didn’t just mean social media, he meant his entire online (Ecommerce) presence! Ok, if the success of Amazon isn’t proof enough that selling "on the line" (“Internship” movie quote, haha) works, I don’t know what else to tell you!
Social Media is just a Fad: Again, 90% of all people are on at least 1 social network. Someone once told Jeff Bezos of Amazon the internet was a fad too.
We won’t get any leads from social media. Yep, you won’t. Because you refuse to try. Meanwhile, excuse me while the rest of us attend to all the leads we’ve produced.
No one talks to me. Well, are you reaching out and talking to anyone? No? There you go.
