Our company of choice this week for the social marketing review is Huma Chia Gel and the platform we will be reviewing for them is Instagram. As you know, Instagram is a fun way to share your life with friends and family via pictures and more recently :15 videos. What you don't see there is a business application to this fast rising social media platform but that doesn't mean that one doesn't exist. For my money, Instagram is a tremendous way to get out the word about your product/brand and in a way that is more emotion inducing than Facebook or Twitter. Yes, you can post pictures on both platforms but the words come first. With Instagram it is the othe way around and as the cliche says: A picture is worth 1,000 words. Try fitting that into 140 characters on Twitter or 420 on Facebook.
Social Marketing Review: Huma Chia Gel On Instagram
Anyway, we are not hear to argue the merits of Instagram versus Facebook versus Twitter versus Google Plus. Instead we are here to review how a small company is leveraging social media and to provide some helpful tips on how to improve their account on a specific platform. With the web based service that Instagram provides this makes it a bit easier to provide screen shots for you as well as have you go ahead and follow Huma Gel right from this post. Go ahead and click right --> HERE <-- to see their Instagram feed.
The first thing you notice about the Huma Gel Instagram feed is the header, which is going to rotate pictures, just like everybody else's but dig a bit deeper on your initial visit and you notice the following:
- The description of who they are, what they do, and why they do it is almost non-existent. There is valuable real estate that is not being used properly.
- Secondly, you notice that there are relatively few photos and not many followers. People love to see pictures and if they can breeze through your feed in 10 seconds they are not likely to follow, not to mention people want to go where the masses are so developing your brand and voice on Instagram is a must. Build it and they will come.
After you scroll past the cover photo you notice the tile page and what has been posted by Huma Gel to date. The beauty of this page is that there are various types of photos being shown and that is enticing as you can grab the attention of various personalities because not everybody will be drawn to the same picture. What else is terrific here is the use of 'Pop Culture' with the Dos Equis man and how they converted that tag line into their own using a meme.
The downside to their tile page is that there are only 30 pictures. I can see them all without having to do much of anything. Once I see that the last time they posted was in August and that the month is nearly over I am less likely to follow them and that seems to be the case since their following is at 92. Being more active on their page will help draw in followers and thus expand the base with which they are marketing to.
If we dig a little deeper into the Huma Gel Instagram page we notice a couple of terrific uses of the medium. They are promoting their other social media accounts, which in this case is Vine. They also show how to use their product in a manner that is different than what it was originally intended for, although you would have to know the original intention since it is not disclosed ins the description section. Lastly, they have posted a review from a happy customer and tagged them in it. This allows the customer to be alerted that they have been tagged but to then also share that image with their following. A domino effect is created.
These are terrific ways to help promote their brand and all done from a different perspective but with the same goal. That goals is to attract more attention to their brand and they are doing that. Now only if they were show casing their brand to more people.
A few tips for Huma Gel to grow their following:
- Search hashtags on Instagram that are important to their business. Hashtags such as #running, #cycling, #triathlon and then follow the accounts that stand out to them so that they can engage them in conversation. After all social media is an engagement platform.
- Run a contest on Instagram showcasing the most unique way in which a Huma Gel can be used. Provide a terrific prize for the winner.
- Create a hashtag that is unique to their business and promote it on other social media platforms as well as on their blog.
Instagram is a great tool to use for small businesses as you can get your customers involved and have them providing the content for you. Engage them in conversation and share their stories with your followers to grow the conversation. Sitting back and hoping that it will happen is not a strategy we believe in.
