Yesterday while I was driving with me wife we made a turn down a local street and there was a house with family and friends out in front.  The group of people all had their head down and were moving their thumbs with lightning speed.  What I did not notice were mouths moving or eye contact being made.  My wife made a comment along the lines of  ‘I remember when they would be out there talking but now with social media’ and I interjected with ‘you mean anti-social media’ and with that my thought process got moving.

 

Social media’s intention was to bring us closer together and while it has done that with those people you moved away from in the 5th grade and haven’t seen in decades what has it done with the people closest to you.  Your neighbors and your family are the closest people to you and yet it seems like they are also the furthest away.  How and when did this happen?

 

The answer to that question is going to be different for everybody but what I do know as a business owner and a person who is always on the lookout for a deal on a product that I use social media has been a tremendous help.  With people having their heads buried in their smart phones and tablets businesses are taking notice and starting to market more and more via social media, known as social marketing.

 

With this increased attention to where the eyeballs are from brands I have received plenty of text messages, Facebook shares and re-tweets directed at me regarding products that I use and have been looking for.  The amount of money, in both actual cost and time spent researching, has been cut down that I have a hard time imagining what I did before getting in touch with people from all around the globe.

 

These days when I want a product I am not necessarily concerned with who is selling it to me but more importantly if it has the cheapest total price including shipping.  After spending plenty of time researching peer reviews and knowing that this is the product for me I will send out a tweet or post an update to Facebook asking if anybody knows where I can find said product.  Typically within moments my phone is buzzing with links and even more reviews for a different product.  I have been sent links to blog posts that review that particular product as well as other similar products.

 

The ability to now purchase a product that I know will fit my needs because I trust the sources of the reviews has greatly increased my satisfaction.  Knowing that I will not have to send back a product thus taking time out of my day to visit the mail center makes life just that much easier and in this day of the get it here now this is a tremendous benefit.

 

Yes, there may be another product out there that is even better than the one I purchased but if they aren’t on social media and marketing their product I will never know about it.  Today I turn to social media for my reviews and then to the company website to purchase.  A company has to be operating in all these fields of digital marketing to generate any revenue from me.  If they are missing one piece then there is a very good chance that I will never make a purchase from them.

 

Social media may be making us less social with our closest inner circle but as long as companies are leveraging the size and speed of social media then I will be there and be using my hard earned money to purchase, yes even a house like I just did.
