What to look for when selecting your Web Team

Why is this important, can’t anybody do it?
Your website is your identity on the web.  Many times, it’ll be the only chance you have to make an impression on a customer.  A properly designed website can be the difference in bringing in that all important lead.  A typical internet user has a short attention span when they are searching for a company that they want to deal with.  Long load times, difficult navigation, and below average design are all reasons for the customer to leave immediately, never to be heard from again.

Selecting your web team is an important decision and it’s best to get it right the first time.

Learn & Plan

For many folks website design is a mysterious process. It’s a combination of creative design and software programming.  And unlike pure design such as a logo or business card, a website must be functional and interactive.

As such, graphic designers that deal primarily with print do not make good web designers.  And computer programmers typically do not make good web programmers.  So selecting a graphics designer you know or your neighbor who works in IT are the makings of a poor start when deciding who is responsible for the identity of your company on the web.

Check out their portfolio.

Website design doesn’t require a license. So there isn’t a standard way to ensure the designer is capable. It takes a high level of skill to create a website that’s appropriate, user friendly, aesthetically pleasing and optimized for different browsers.

Experience is one indicator of skill. You want to be sure your website firm has been at it awhile. You’ll also want to take a look at samples of sites they’ve designed. If you like the websites that they have built for their other customers, it’s likely you will also like what they build for you.

Stay away from the cheap company.

Building a website is much like building a house, with the exception of material expenses.   You are paying for the time it takes to put your site together and the experience of the team.  The best websites are designed by the best talent and take the longest time to build.   The company that undercuts the competition is undercutting on experience and/or the time that they spend on your website.  Therefore the old adage ”you get what you pay for” applies.

Now at Sonix Studio, we’ve streamlined the web building process and strive to keep overhead expenses at a minimum.  By smart spending and developing innovative processes, we are able to do more for less.  The bottom line: if you are price shopping and there is a large difference in the cost, you are either not comparing apples to apples or one of the companies isn’t as reputable as they may seem.

Watch for hosting costs.

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center.

A common trick with web companies is to provide a lower design estimate but bump up the hosting costs.  By doing this, you actually end up paying more for your project after a year or two than you would with the more expensive estimate with cheaper hosting.  Be sure to calculate these expenses in your decision making.

High Pressure Salesman

Pressure may turn coal into a diamond, but it doesn’t make for good business decisions. If a sales person is rushing you to sign a contract or hand over credit card information, that’s not a good sign.

The kid next door.

The kid next door may be capable of putting together a website, but it’s not likely he’ll have the resources and experience of a complete web design company. Many companies have gone with ”someone they know” and then been left high and dry when he/she moves on, gets another job or just plain losses interest.

Websites need updating over time. You want to be sure you have a reliable firm that will deliver on time and on budget and will be there in the future when you need them.
