Instagram is fairly ‘new’ to the scene of social media but that doesn’t mean it is not a powerful tool in your marketing tool kit.  The cliche pictures tell 1,000 words is very true and when it comes to your product on social media it probably tells more than that.


The beauty of Instagram is that this is original content that can be uploaded to your feed without much effort and can be leveraged against other social media.  The Instagram app lets you post to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, Foursquare and send out via email.  So if that 1 picture tells 1,000 words on Instagram, it also says 1,000 words on each of the other social media outlets that are connected and that allows for your product to go viral fairly quickly.


While sending out the picture to multiple networks is one benefit the other is that you can search various hashtags to see which are most popular and then tag your photos (if they fit the hashtag) and provide your content another leg up on the competition.  Users search for keywords on Instagram the same way they search for keywords on Twitter.  Use this to your advantage, and  better yet create your own hashtag so that you can see which users are using it and begin the process of engagement.


For example, I use the hashtag #EnduranceFoodies in my Instagram feed.  There is a small following of other endurance athletes that are also foodies and thus we are able to connect with each other through the hashtag.  As a business you can identify and create community leaders through your unique hashtag.


A third benefit, of many, is that you can ask your customers to upload their pics by tagging you and giving you a library of additional content that you can re-post through your social media marketing channels as well as re-post on Instagram.  This gives you marketers for your brand that can reach far and wide.  If you are a restaurant, and one your customers takes a picture of your food and posts it to Instagram as well as the other channels that is marketing that cannot have a value placed against it because there are friends and family that will see the picture and create an automatic positive peer review for you.


There are more benefits to using Instagram for your business but these three alone should provide you with enough motivation to start using the app.  There is a world of content out there waiting to be photographed but just start with your brand and watch it grow.
